:: PELLET AND WOOD GASIFYING BURNERS IN HUNGARY

Pellet burners appeared on the Hungarian market only two or three years ago. The main obstacle of their coming into general use is the fact that they are still too expensive for the average Hungarian purse. The price of the burners depends on their size, capacity and mainly on the producer.

On the Hungarian pellet burner market there are only a few domestic producers representing themselves, distributors sell principally burners made in Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland Germany and Italy. Besides pellet burners one can buy burners fired with wood chips, woodcuts, corn, and with vegetable parts, and there are "omnivorous" burners too.

The capacity of the pellet burner which is able to ensure the heating and hot water supply of a 100-120 m2 family house is about 20-40 KW. To define the exact level of capacity needed, first the real heat-demand of the house is has to be determined with a previous survey. The burners carry the fuel in automatically, and their prices show big differences even in case of same capacity: they run from 400.000 Ft to 2.000.000 Ft + VAT. In these prices the cost of the additional equipments, hot water-tank and the expenses of installation are not included.

Today in Hungary the price/kg of woodpellet is around 60-70 Ft (VAT included), pellets made of fodder - agripellet - are much cheaper, only 36-42 Ft/kg (VAT included). Woodpellets are not produced in Hungary, the factories are settled mainly in Transylvania, Slovakia, Poland and Czech Republic. Austrian and Italian pellets are also on the Hungarian market. The pellet supply in Hungary cannot be considered solved, production and the growing demand of pellet has not been harmonized yet.
There is a Hungarian firm that produces agripellet using domestic raw material: straw, reed, oily plants. Pellets are made from their mixture.

The rate of components can be changed so the heating value of agripellet moves from14 MJ/Kg to 24 MJ/K - almost according to wish or need. Its advantage over woodpellet is the fact that the raw material of agripellet is reproduced yearly, while a tree needs 15 years for reproduction.

Woodcuts are substantially cheaper than pellets: 8-12 Ft/kg. According to a burner-distributor firm distribution of woodcuts is a big and unsolved problem in Hungary. The provision is difficult, generally it can be ordered only in big quantity, so big space is needed for storage. Besides, forestries sell almost all the woodcuts to nearby heating plants. According to the information obtained from a public road maintaining company the prunings collected by them from the roads are either burned or cut into very small pieces and are thrown over the fields.

The storage of pellet and woodcut needs special care, the warehouse has to be dry and well aired, otherwise the fuel becomes wet, mouldy.

According to our calculations for a year 2-6 tons of woodpellet is needed for the heating and hot water supply of a 100-120 m2 family house. The price of a sack of pellet (15 kg) is about 1035 Ft, so depending on the quantity of fuel used during the year the prices are the following: 137.000Ft - 413.000 Ft. Breaking the expenses down into months, it means 22.950 Ft - 68.830 Ft/month.

Making the same calculation with agripellet (counting with 5-7 t.pellet/year) the expenses run from 180.000 Ft-210.000 Ft.
Some of the pellet-distributor firms give home-delivery service. Their prices depend on the distance of the destination from their depot and the minimum quantity of order is always stipulated (for example 5q)

If we make the same calculation with woodcuts the result is the following: if 4-10 tons is the total amount needed for a year - counting with 8 Ft/kg - it is 32.000Ft - 80.000 Ft - with 12 Ft/kg - it is 48.000Ft - 120.000 Ft.

One can obtain woodcuts or wood chips from forestries or from public road maintaining companies on individual agreements. This area is quite undeveloped, there isn't any company which deals with the collection and distribution of wood chips and woodcuts.

The table below shows figures of a 100 m2 house in case of using different fuels for heating.

Here comes a short description about the most commonly used traditional energy resources in Hungary and their prices.
The majority of Hungarian households are heated with gas or district heating. Almost 80 % of the population use gas, that means nearly 3.840.000 households. 16% of the population utilize district heating which means almost 640.000 flats.

1000.000 - 150.000 may be the number of the flats which are heated with heat-accumulating electric heater. This is 2,5-3% of the population and these people are mainly the employees of electric energy industry, pensioners of this sector or their relatives. The remaining 1-1,5% uses other modes of heating.
In February 2007 the market price of natural gas in Hungary is between 98 and 102 Ft/m3. The prices of district heating cannot be easily defined because there are several district heating works and they are run by municipalities. The prices are determined by them taking the different functional conditions into account, so the prices vary.

There are three different tariffs used for calculating prices of electric energy used by households.

The non-preferential "A" tariff of electric energy for households is about 38 Ft/ KWh. The price of "B" conducted, or night current is about 23 Ft/KWh. Today in Hungary nearly 50.000 people heat with heat-accumulating electric heater using night current.
The workers, pensioners of electric energy-industry and their relatives are entitled to use electric energy calculated on "C" tariff, that is 14,5 Ft/KWh.

According to Energy Center KHT prices of alternative energy resources remained the same this year - but this fact itself doesn't motivate people to change fuels.
